domani 1 settembre 2010 gli studenti, i precari, i ricercatori e i docenti che hanno a cuore l'università pubblica incontrano le famiglie e le matricole all'apertura della tornata dei test d'ingresso per i corsi di laurea (tutti) a numero chiuso dell'università di Catania.
Non un altro anno accademico può iniziare sotto la scure del Governo e la miope prospettiva del Ministro dell'Istruzione: denounce the dismantling of public universities, the cuts to university and research, the dismissal of precarious researchers, blocking the turn-over and the frontal assault on the right to education.
The future of public universities is not a problem for students, researchers and teachers, but belongs to all families.
There is no quality without opportunity: the equation "excellence" of universities = reduction in the number of students admitted is just shameful.

OPEN LETTER TO STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES
Dear student / dear student,
Dear Parent,
as you probably know the Italian university experiencing a phase of tremendous crisis.
The government, with the latest finance laws, has reduced by 20% funding to the University.
Of 20%! One must ask: Where else in the state system - Transport, health, justice - could withstand a cut of this guy? Just think of the Italian school is in an extreme crisis with cuts of 10%.
This choice will have consequences that all of you should be aware.
The first consequence is that of a steady and progressive increase of tuition fees , taxes will increase from next year by about 20%. This increase will be followed by others in later years, of equal if not greater magnitude. Between three to five years, tuition fees of a student from a family of average income will be increased by 100%.
What sense does it increase tuition fees, already this year, with families in crisis and the ongoing economic distress? This is the solution to the crisis in our country? Why do other advanced countries (USA, Germany, France) are increasing or maintaining unchanged resources for education, universities and research? With these cuts, Italy is the European country that invests less in research and the University: only 0.8% of Gross Domestic Product, which is the country's wealth. The European average is 1 to 4%.
The second consequence is that the reduction in student services . Decrease the scholarships, soup kitchens, the residence halls, will be cut off many degree courses, and has already been established the number closed in all courses of study. Because the government says he wants to protect the right to study where in 60 years Republican was never made a serious policy to that effect? Are not you ashamed? Without this assistance, in fact, only the rich and not too many families will face the choice of a quality university education for their children. This is not right, not civil, it is not decent.
The third consequence is the dismissal of thousands of people working in the University and the reduction in the quality of teaching
Too often, television and newspapers give a distorted picture of the university. The University of the "barons", the University of nepotism, the University of figli dei figli, degli amici degli amici. Nell’Università esistono certo dei casi di gestione poco trasparente, come in altre parti del nostro sistema statale. Ma nell’Università lavorano, con sacrificio e con retribuzioni penose, migliaia e migliaia di giovani. Forse voi studenti non sapete che il 40% circa di quelli che giustamente chiamate “professori” sono precari, “contrattisti”, che verranno fortemente penalizzati dai tagli ai finanziamenti dell’Università pubblica previsti dal governo già a partire da quest’anno. E forse voi genitori ignorate che senza quel 40 % l’offerta didattica rischierebbe, a fronte di un aumento delle tasse, di essere affidata a soggetti estranei all’Università e assolutamente non qualificati che certamente non potrebbero garantire quell’alto livello di formazione che oggi più che mai il mercato del lavoro richiede.
L’Università attende una riforma; una riforma che punisca i baroni, i privilegi, le cricche. Lo scorso luglio il Senato della Repubblica ha approvato il DDL 1905 (la cosiddetta “Riforma Gelmini”). Una legge dannosa e inutile che consegna le Università nelle mani di manager di nomina politica, riduce la democrazia negli atenei (dando tutto in mano a pochi baroni), relega i giovani studiosi in un limbo di 11-13 anni di precariato (cosa impensabile in qualsiasi altro paese europeo) prima dell’assunzione come docenti, dipendente comunque dalle financial resources. Hanno deciso di protestare i professori associati , il cui ruolo viene svilito e disconosciuto, e sempre più professori ordinari si stanno unendo alla protesta nazionale, accettando solo le ore di insegnamento frontale prescritte dalla legge, nella consapevolezza che questa “riforma” costituisce la fine dell’Università italiana. Moltissimi tra i colleghi precari e tra gli studenti condividono e sostengono la nostra protesta e con essi il personale tecnico-amministrativo delle Università.
Molti atenei sono già sull’orlo della chiusura. Molte Facoltà chiudono. Decine di corsi di laurea are cut. With this policy Italy will soon be an underdeveloped country.
We want a University that will help the country to grow and become strong, a university that gives well-being and future for our youth. Because the university is the brain of a modern country, the university and the school are the only way to meet the challenges of cultural and economic future. We are not naive: the future well-being do not certainly will give them the television! Therefore, dear students, dear parents, we ask you to support our protest. Our protest is at your disposal, our protest has meaning if it becomes la protesta degli studenti, delle famiglie, di tutta l’università.
Non lasciamo che nessuno rubi il nostro futuro!
